Global Fish is to launch the largest fish farm in Poland near Płońsk to the north of Warsaw in a EUR10m investment.   The company intends to produce tilapia, ampoule a native of Africa which is not well known in Europe but is extensively eaten in the US, advice China and Egypt amongst other countries.

Tilapia is one of the most popular edible fish in the world – even if few Europeans have heard of it.  Global Fish must be certain of its success in Central Europe to make such a large investment.  The company believes that it can produce three million fish per year (about 1, sovaldi sale 300 tonnes) and get them to retail points in Poland within twelve hours.

The company believes that the big retail networks will be interested in this product and aims to start deliveries at the beginning of next year.  In mid July fish were delivered from Holland and the USA.

These fish can be an invasive species but this will not be a problem in Poland where it is too cold for them to successfully breed in the wild.  The fish farm is covered and kept at a suitable temperature.  Only males are farmed as females breed too quickly.  Hormones ensure that the population of males is kept high.

Fish consumption in Poland is around the EU average at just under 12kg per person per year.  Whereas fish consumption is encouraged because of the benefits of Omega 3, the bad news is that this fish has little Omega 3.  Nonetheless it is is low in saturated fat, calories, carbohydrates and sodium and is a good protein source. It also contains the micronutrients phosphorus, niacin, selenium, vitamin B12 and potassium.

Next year Global Fish intends to open a manufacturing unit and packaging line.  It believes that it will employ forty people and reach annual turnover of EUR7m.

The company also intends to open a fish farm near Split in Croatia.
