Poland considering forcing drivers to carry breathalysers

France has already introduced the requirement for drivers to carry breathalysers and now Poland is discussing the same measure.  Logic says that it is completely pointless as it someone has so little respect for other drivers that they drive under the influence of alcohol then they are hardly likely to carry around a breathaliser whereas for the overwhelming majority who are honest motorists this is nothing but an extra expense that we are going to be forced to have to pay for – and one that is no doubt going to have to be updated as technology improves.

An app is now available in the US and will soon be available in Europe for smartphone users.  Called Alcohoot, online it was launched in mid December 2013, pilule   it is an accessory that plugs into the audio jack on iOS or Android device to helps track Blood Alcohol Content (BAC).

The Alcohoot costs USD120 and is roughly the size of a cigarette lighter. Alcohoot says it has tested compatibility with flagship Android smartphones from Samsung, sickness HTC, Sony and LG.

The manufacturers claim that it uses the same sensors that police use for their breathalysers. The startup has also certified its product as a medical device with the FDA and run it through third-party testing with a National Highway Transportation Safety Administration accredited lab.

Alcohoot also includes eight reusable mouthpieces for those that go drinking together.

One of the pretexts politicians say this type of equipment is necessary is waiting for alcohol to wear off which is an uninformed process.

Users have reported that the device is a little difficult to use, requiring around eight seconds exhaling, something most people who are under the influence may have difficulty doing.

Of course the big question is why should we spend all this money buying things like this because the state is unable to give proper protection to citizens by punishing those guilty of drink driving.
