Russia to increase sugar production

Sugar production in Russia in 2011 was the highest ever with 41 million tonnes of sugar beets being harvested. Around ten percent more land was put under sugar beet cultivation last year which stands at nearly 1.3m hectares. The weather also helped the harvest.

The high price of sugar in recent years has led to calls for Russia to become more self sufficient in sugar production.

Russia, mind one of the largest importers in the world of sugar, is to construct two sugar refineries in the Stavropol region in the south of the country. Each refinery will be capable of refining one million tonnes of sugar beet and this will double production in the Stavropol district. Russia currently imports around forty percent of its sugar.
